Several years ago numerous customers relayed their difficulty finding professional contractors to perform renovation work. They shared various stories on the challenges of getting projects finished or the lack of quality workmanship.
After hearing their stories, Richard Messick, a long time construction professional, contacted me about creating a new company that dealt solely with additions and renovations. Our research confirmed that people indeed were having difficulties and that most of the renovation providers were either single guys in pickup trucks or a custom homebuilder who was not focused on addition and renovations work. Both have their own set of issues - the single guy might be less expensive but not have the quality control required for the many facets of renovation work, not to mention possibly lacking in appropriate insurance which puts the home owner at risk. The homebuilders are typically using renovation work to fill in down time in their production schedule. They are usually very good at building homes, but unfortunately they rarely have the experience or the patience required to perform the critical work associated with renovating a house or section of a house, or even creating a new living space.
We decided that if we were going to enter this business that we would be specialists. We believed that with our experienced crews and our backgrounds in engineering disciplines we could bring a new level of focus and quality. We decided to specialize solely on additions and renovations so we could bring professionalism, process and quality control, and a true sense of urgency to the field. In a recent article in Qualified Remodeler it mentioned the increase in homebuilders looking for work in the renovation field. The article compared choosing a renovation contractor to going to the doctor, “If you have a heart condition and you need surgery you don’t go to a general practitioner you go to the heart specialist”.
Especially in these trying economic times you need someone who has an impeccable list of references and who is going to provide value by helping you with design decisions. You also need someone who brings to light potential issues before the project starts. The last thing you want is to sign a contract and then have surprises that can add 10-20% or more to your project cost.
